Los Mariposas

Costa Rica has over 1,000 varieties of butterfly -- large and small, drab and colorful, striped, polka-dotted, and everything in between.

Although I saw few butterflies in the rainforest, two of the resorts at which we stayed had butterfly gardens -- Mariposaria -- that were filled with plants, flowers, and many many varieties of the lovely winged creatures.

Some weren't at all shy, and sat on my hand.

Most, however, were photographed on the fly, or while briefly alight on a leaf or flower.
